Having food for families was a great idea for this event. The kids were proud of the cupcakes they made and liked decorating them at the event. I thought it was also a nice way for families to connect and chat while decorating. I was really happy with all the families that came. Only two families didn't show up. The principal also stopped by and was thrilled with the energy and amount of families that were involved with their kids. This event gave families time together and a chance to learn from their students. One of the best moments was when I shut the lights off and the squishy circuit play doh was glowing. What a fun afternoon!
At each table there will be supplies for the Maker event. The tables will be set up for each challenge. One has cardboard and one has recycled materials that we have saved up. There are all different colored caps, acorns, odds and ends, string, duct tape and other materials. We will also have Dash set up for families to try and a table for "making cupcakes" with toppings. There will also be iPads out with Scratch Jr. for families to try out coding. I am hoping that most parents will be able to make it. I have sent home reminders, put it on my classroom blog and included it in my weekly newsletter. Here's fingers crossed for Sunday!
Students helped measure ingredients and make cupcakes for Sunday. they are very excited to have their parents come. We cleaned the classroom and talked about what they could teach their parents about. It is nice to see kids feel like they are the teachers and have something important to share. The only downside feeling to an event like this is the child whose family can't make it. I have thought of offering a day after school where parents who couldn't make it could come in another night to have their child show them what they are learning.
