We dove into making cardboard automata yesterday. We recycled the Squishy Circuit boxes, which were a great size. Students started with changing the box by cutting off the flaps. I quickly realized what a process it is to help students with this project that are at different places. Some students waited in line for me to help hot glue the triangles onto the corners of their boxes while others designed what would move on their boxes. I was slightly overwhelmed at one point because I felt like I needed another body in the classroom to help. I was happy to see how engaged they were. By the end of the two classes we used for it, there was cardboard, pom poms and decorations throughout the room. Making my cardboard Santa at home was a lot different then doing it with a lot more bodies. We still need a few more days to finish the projects. I am also making one that has a sleigh and reindeer that will go back and forth. I love seeing them be little makers. They were great about asking each other for help and looking at what others were making for their box. I will add more pictures on Monday as we work towards creating their finished products. I am left with thinking of how I should be assessing this as my principal is questioning what i am not teaching by adding all these new ideas.

Students are using the programs Path and Blockly to learn how to make Dash follow a code. They are getting better at problem solving and have tried making Dash move objects and make sounds.
Students and I are learning how to program using codes in Scratch Junior. Students are going to come up with their own stories using this program.
Cardboard automata is a fun way to make things out of simple and cheap materials. The appeal to me is that children can make and invent toys without having to have costly materials. My own children were excited to see what they could make out of cardboard. it is a great way to just relax and use your imagination.
I decided to start my first project by making a Santa. The tools I used were cardboard cereal boxes, a nail, hot glue gun, foam (could use cardboard), skewer sticks (could use a stick) pom poms, and glitter. The last two materials were to make it festive. |
