We dove into making cardboard automata yesterday. We recycled the Squishy Circuit boxes, which were a great size. Students started with changing the box by cutting off the flaps. I quickly realized what a process it is to help students with this project that are at different places. Some students waited in line for me to help hot glue the triangles onto the corners of their boxes while others designed what would move on their boxes. I was slightly overwhelmed at one point because I felt like I needed another body in the classroom to help. I was happy to see how engaged they were. By the end of the two classes we used for it, there was cardboard, pom poms and decorations throughout the room. Making my cardboard Santa at home was a lot different then doing it with a lot more bodies. We still need a few more days to finish the projects. I am also making one that has a sleigh and reindeer that will go back and forth. I love seeing them be little makers. They were great about asking each other for help and looking at what others were making for their box. I will add more pictures on Monday as we work towards creating their finished products. I am left with thinking of how I should be assessing this as my principal is questioning what i am not teaching by adding all these new ideas.
